Job Summary

The Digital Marketing and Communications Manager reports to the Director of Digital Marketing and Communications. In collaboration with the University Marketing and Communications team, the Digital MarComm Manager supports the mission of the university by creating and implementing integrated content and digital strategy for a wide range of university digital communication and marketing platforms, including but not limited to university websites, blogs, social media, video, audio, marketing automation platform and e-newsletters channels - designed to market and promote SJSU to key audiences. The Digital MarComm Manager serves as the lead for the university’s social media channels and livestream initiative, as well as the university’s Hootsuite partnership. The incumbent will organize and implement digital assets and publish digital content to maximize SJSU’s exposure, promote SJSU’s brand and achieve communication goals via all digital communication channels while upholding SJSU’s web and accessibility standards. The Digital MarComm Manager will also provide scheduled reports, audits and analysis related to Google Analytics, video, social media, search engine optimization, marketing campaigns, and advertising. The incumbent will organize digital assets and publish digital content to maximize SJSU’s exposure, promote SJSU’s brand and achieve communication goals via the web; uphold SJSU’s web and accessibility standards and is a member of the university’s emergency communications team.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and implement digital communications/marketing strategies on various communication channels (e.g. websites, social media, blogs, video, audio, e-marketing) that supports university’s strategic goals and key initiatives.
  • Develop compelling stories, messages and visuals that attract and engage a digital audience and follow SJSU’s brand standards and communication style guidelines.
  • Write original content, coordinate, edit and proofread written contributions from others and maintain quality, consistency and relevance.
  • Manage all required content (text, video, images, etc.) and provide metadata, such as keywords and short descriptions, to accompany each piece of content.
  • Create digital advertising marketing plans and strategies to increase brand awareness, enrollment, donor/alumni engagement, and other key university initiatives.
  • Lead campus-wide social media strategy and provide training to SJSU Campus Communicators Network and Hootsuite users; guide efforts of student assistants and campus employees in social media best practices that advance SJSU's strategic goals.
  • Lead in the development, ideation and scheduling of social media content; manage a rich content calendar and social media guide.
  • Produce high quality, engaging, and visually interesting still photos, video images/videography and live content for a variety of platforms.
  • Assign and direct photography and video vendors and manage student assistants who support web and social media efforts.
  • Continually assess and remediate websites for accuracy; oversee regular review of digital content with subject matter experts to ensure content remains accurate and current and ensure online content meets legal and compliance requirements.
  • Develop, implement and continually improve SJSU's engagement on social media and other online networks.
  • Monitor relevant conversations in social media, tools and web applications, and represent the university in these conversations as appropriate.
  • Gain insight into target audiences, build engagement and manage digital communications strategy.
  • Drive consistent, relevant traffic and leads from our social networks.
  • Manage timely responses to customers and followers’ queries and comments
  • Manage communications in crisis situations, including coordination with the media relations team and leadership—with support from the Digital Director.
  • Lead university livestream effort, which includes management of SJSU Vimeo channel. Provide stream keys as needed for events.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • Expert writing, editorial, interpersonal communication, active listening, analytical skills
  • Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts in presentation format
  • Comprehensive knowledge of web and digital communications with the ability to develop and execute communications in evolving media to effectively promote and position the university
  • Expert in web content standards, blogging, email marketing, and social media marketing
  • Knowledge in content management systems to update, curate and manage digital content
  • Knowledge in social media platforms/tools, and an understanding of audience demographics and how they use these platforms to guide content and technology (e.g., Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram, Facebook, Google, Reddit, Snapchat, Pinterest, Periscope, blogs, wikis, RSS, etc.)
  • Knowledge in data and analytics to measure impact, create metrics reports and refine strategies (e.g., Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics, Search Engine Optimization, marketing automation, various social and digital tools.)
  • Ability to produce still photos, video images/videography and live content for a variety of communications. Skills and ability with photo and video editing software (online and native applications) is necessary
  • Ability to write and edit HTML and CSS
  • Knowledge in project management meet deadlines, follow-through on assignments, take direction, attend to and communicate about the details of any assignment and juggle multiple competing priorities. Demonstrate personal initiative and strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of web usability, accessibility, browser compatibility, design, prototyping and deploying mobile-friendly, responsive websites
  • Knowledge of all aspects of digital communications, including the technical aspects of various media
  • Knowledge of online and native creative applications, such as Photoshop and Premiere, and the encoding standards for optimal online delivery of multimedia content

 

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or equivalent
  • Five years of related professional or technical experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • MFA or related Master’s degree
  • Experience developing and implementing digital communications and marketing strategies on websites, social media, video/audio, marketing automation and other digital channels
  • Experience with digital and social media marketing
  • Experience working within content management systems (CMS) to update, curate and manage digital content
  • Experience producing and editing photos, videos/audio and live content

 

Compensation

Classification: Public Affairs Communications Specialist III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,334/month - $7,584/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,842/month - $8,759/month
