Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Director for Alumni Engagement, the Associate Director for Networks and Student Engagement serves as an integral member of the Alumni Engagement team. The position plays a critical role in carrying out the strategic engagement effort to develop and sustain relationships among the San Jose State University’s alumni and foster a continued connection between affinity groups, such as networks. This position will advise and manage established networks, on-board new networks, and create process consistency among various groups while adhering to Alumni Association guidelines. Under the direction of the Senior Director, the Associate Director will manage the Alumni Association Membership Campaigns with the goal of increasing overall membership with the alumni association and memberships within the networks and chapters. The Associate Director works directly with the Assistant Director, Events and Special Projects on organizing events that facilitate increased engagement with Networks and Chapters within the University.
The Associate Director will be responsible for the Student Alumni Connection and working with the SJSU Career Center on programs that encourage a lasting relationship with the University. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for developing programming that engages alumni, the Networks, with students on campus in storytelling, advice-sharing, and formal and informal mentoring efforts. The Associate Director should work to identify, recruit, and motivate volunteers to provide leadership for or participate in creating or participating in mentorship programs with current students and focus on student-to-alumni-based connections. The incumbent will also focus on deepening the networks and the group’s philanthropic involvement over the course of a lifelong relationship with the University.
Key Responsibilities
- Directly responsible for developing, implementing, and administering all aspects of alumni networks and chapters
- On-board new networks, including advising on bylaws, membership, budget and programming
- Create and maintain process consistency among the various groups’. Formulate, implement and maintain standard policy and procedures for alumni network operations.
- Create and manage a council/committee to communicate and share best practices.
- Disseminate the groups’ efforts and communications to Alumni Engagement, the campus community and to our regionally based alumni
- Work with necessary members of the Alumni Engagement team and campus community to support the groups’ efforts in regard to engagement, membership, scholarship, events and programming
- Monitor and reconcile network financial statements - (e.g., income, expenses, cash available) to facilitate planning events and activities
- Build and maintain the connection across networks and chapters and expand to regional affinity
- Review and advise on marketing collateral necessary to foster continued volunteer interaction and participation in alumni network outreach and programming
- Acts as the liaison between network leaders/volunteers and various University constituents, including but not limited to Student Affairs, Dean's offices, Financial Aid, etc.
- Assist network volunteers in planning and executing event-related needs such as contracts, processing funds collected, financial data, and insurance coverage
- Monitors planned network and chapter programs and provides ongoing analysis and evaluation. Ensures activities are consistent with Alumni Engagement goals and Transformation 2030 Strategic Plan
- Recruit, retain and train alumni volunteers and facilitate their active involvement in Alumni Association and campus activities. Ensures that each network and chapter build leadership succession into their planning
- Provides timely and accurate reporting to the Alumni Association Board of Directors regarding network status and activities and to the Engagement Committee on any emerging issues, participation numbers, financial data, etc.; facilitates outreach/ communications to the constituency
- Works directly with the Assistant Director, Events and Special Projects on organizing events that facilitate increased engagement with Networks and Chapters within the University
- Under the direction of the Senior Director, will develop a year-round calendar for an Alumni Association membership solicitation campaign
- Working with the SJSU University Marketing and Communications department, design marketing material to promote alumni association membership. This would include hard copy materials, social media promotions, and electronic (email) materials.
- Monitor and report on the progress of campaigns, including compiling reports on the number of new memberships secured and total dollars raised. This report will be presented at quarterly SJSU Alumni Association Board of Director meetings.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps and experience utilizing database programs and platforms

- Willingness and ability to work both independently and in a collegial team environment
- Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree required or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved
- Minimum 4 years of successful experience in alumni engagement or CSU higher education, student centric events or a combination of both
- Experience in diverse, equitable and inclusive initiatives that build affinity
- Experience in working with alumni networking to build creative and mutually beneficial relationships with member-based networks/ groups and individuals
- Experienced in demonstrating and reporting on this return of investment/engagement
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree
- Experience in working in higher education and specifically alumni engagement or other relevant experience at a college or university with a comprehensive alumni relations program
- Experience in networking to build mutually beneficial relationships that expand regionally
- Experience in communicating the University’s mission to a wide range of constituents
- Coordinating, mediating and collaborating with affinity-based networks/groups
Compensation
Classification: Administrator II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,798/month - $8,334/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,812/month - $15,449/month
The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
