Job Summary

The Student Athlete Resource Center Department at San José State University supports the academic mission of the University and collaboratively works with the campus community to enhance student success.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Athlete Resource Center (SARC), the Athletic Academic Coach provides academic coaching, counseling, analysis, and assessment to student-athletes. The coach also supports students in helping them understand California State University (CSU), San José State University (SJSU) requirements relating to their degree requirements; and Mountain West Athletic Conference, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletic requirements. The Athletic Academic Coach develops, coordinates, implements, and assesses academic support and other retention services and programs for student-athletes in accordance with University policies, NCAA, and athletic conference rules and regulations. The functions and responsibilities of this position include serving as a liaison to the coaching staff of assigned teams and assisting with the development and monitoring of academic support programs of the Gadway and YUH Academic Centers.

 

Key Responsibilities

  •  Provide holistic academic coaching and support to a cohort of students
  • Develop and implement an asset-based and strengths-based approach while using a case management strategy to establish a working relationship that includes regular meetings, careful documentation, tracking of student progress, and assessment of student success.
  • Reinforce college-based and other success centers’ orientation of students to their academic requirements (MyProgress, Catalog), academic planning tools (MyPlanner, Roadmap), and campus resources.
  • Liaise with college-based success centers and the undeclared student success center to ensure students are enrolled in appropriate courses and making progress toward their degree.
  • Contribute to service-delivery function of department by promoting student-athletes’ success through retention programs such as summer bridge
  • In conjunction with college and other student success centers, monitor academic progress by leveraging early support systems [EAB Navigate (Spartan Connect) progress reports] and implement systems that offer timely interventions to support student needs
  •  Monitor student-athletes’ academic progress toward degree, including initial and continuous eligibility by monitoring academic records to meet SJSU, Mountain West Conference, and NCAA requirements
  • Provide coaching to students on courses and major selection
  • Update student athletes’ data on official records, and collaborate with Undergraduate Admissions and the Academic Eligibility Coordinator to monitor all student athletes’ continuous eligibility to practice and compete in intercollegiate sports
  • Prepare and submit regular reports on progress and status of SARC programming
  • Interpret and explain policies to staff members and provide clarification on policies and procedures to SJSU offices and representatives from other colleges and departments
  • Provide support to students by communicating with coaches and other Department of Athletics staff as needed to support academic performance

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  •  Basic principles of individual and group behavior, and techniques and methods of interviewing/connecting with students for the purposes of effective holistic academic student support
  • NCAA policies and procedures related to academic support
  • Asset-based and strengths-based approaches to academic coaching
  • Student development theories and principles, retention strategies, and program development
  •  Strong coaching skills, including demonstrated excellence in active listening and in helping individuals with problem identification, problem solving, conflict resolution, decision making, and use of campus resources
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal) with individuals/groups. Ability to present clear and concise information. Excellent customer-service skills
  •  Motivate and advocate for students
  • Recognize and refer students to appropriate student services and resources in a timely manner, and keep good working relationships with the units providing these student services/resources
  • Work independently and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and faculty; function as part of a team
  • Be flexible and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Meet deadlines

 

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Social Work, Education, or a directly related field
  • Demonstrated NCAA knowledge and work experience in the academic support of student-athletes and athletic academic eligibility
  • Demonstrated written communication skills with a strong customer service background in a student-athlete focused educational setting with collegiate coaches, faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated work experience in CSU/SJSU General Education and overall undergraduate degree requirements
  • Experience with PeopleSoft and/or customer service based technology systems

 

Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,416/month - $/5,687month
CSU Salary Range: $5,276/month - $7,517/month
